Johnny ‘J’ Jackson, le célèbre producteur et ami de Tupac, nous a quitté le 3 octobre dernier. Il avait 39 ans. Le producteur était incarcéré dans une prison de Los Angeles. Annoncée comme un suicide, une enquête est en cours afin de déterminer les raisons exactes de sa mort. Il laisse derrière lui une femme et trois enfants.

Même s’il n’était pas aussi connu qu’un Dr Dre, Timbaland ou Swizz Beatz, Johnny J n’en était pas moins talentueux. Véritable Hitmaker, il est à l’origine, pour ne citer que les plus connus, de « All About U », « Hit Em Up », « How Do U Want It », « Made Niggaz », mais surtout de la grande majorité des tubes des albums de 2Pac, dont la moitié des productions de l’album « All Eyez On Me ».

Johnny J démarre sa carrière en 1990 avec la production du single « Knockin Boots » pour l’album « No Shame in My Game » de Candyman, devenu disque de platine. Il rencontre alors 2Pac et enregistre avec lui neuf morceaux en trois jours. Il produit alors « Pour Out A Little Liquor » sur l’album « Thug Life ». En 1995, il lance son premier album « I Gotta Be Me ». Il produit également pour Tupac, « Death Around The Corner » et de nombreux morceaux moins connus comme « Never Had A Friend Like Me » ou « Unconditional Love »

Il a également composé pour les bandes originales des films « Gridlock’d », « SuperCop » ou « Blood Diamond ». Durant sa carrière, il a travaillé avec de nombreux artistes, tels que Big Syke, Craig Mack, Jon B, K-Ci & JoJo, WC, Bizzy Bone, CJ Mac et Chamillionaire. Avant d’être emprisonné, Johnny travaillait pour un groupe inconnu de L.A, mais aussi sur un nouvel album de Tatyana Ali. Présent sur les albums posthumes de 2Pac, il était également patron du label Klock Work Entertainment.

Si on comptabilisait toutes ses productions, il aurait vendu plus de 100 millions de disques et mériterait pour cette performance d’être aussi reconnu que Dr Dre voire Quincy Jones. Lors d’une interview, il avait révélé qu’il détenait environ 30 morceaux inédits de Tupac et une partie des droits sur sa discographie. « Nous faisions six à sept morceaux par jour » avait-il déclaré. « Pour moi, la vie de Tupac était comme un film où Johnny J en serait la soundtrack » ajouta Crooked I, ex-artiste Death Row. « Les classiques qu’il a produit pour 2Pac resteront avec nous à jamais ; nous, la West Coast, mais également le monde entier. »
