Le retraité Jay-Z et le groupe Outkast sont les artistes les plus nominés aux MTV Video Music Awards 2004. Respectivement, ils ont à leur actif 6 et 5 nominations.

Ce qui est paradoxal, c'est la vidéo de Jigga, 99 Problems, a été plusieurs fois censurée pendant la journée par la programmation de MTV à cause de la mise en scène du meurtre de l'artiste à la fin de clip. Quant aux Outkast, ils sont nominés pour leur clip Hey Ya.

Vient ensuite un autre artiste du Roc A Fella, Kanye West, nominé quatre fois avec son clip All Falls Down. Parmi ces catégories : Meilleure Vidéo d'un Artiste Masculin, Meilleure Vidéo Hip Hop et Meilleur Nouvel Artiste.

Les MTV VMA se dérouleront le 29 août en direct de Miami.
